Rebuild Grip Strength, Dexterity, and Coordination
SHOP BEAST PUTTY →Your hands do everything. When they stop working right, it affects everything.
Whether you are recovering from a wrist fracture, managing arthritis, or rebuilding fine motor control after a neurological event, putty-based hand therapy is one of the most effective and versatile tools available. Occupational therapists have used therapeutic putty for decades — because it works. Here's how to use it properly.
WHY PUTTY IS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR HAND THERAPY
Unlike static resistance tools (grip trainers, hand springs), putty is infinitely configurable. You can shape it into a ball for full-palm squeezing, flatten it for extension exercises, or coil it into a rope for wrist coordination work. The same material covers dozens of therapeutic exercises.
Putty also provides progressive resistance through natural heat — it softens as you use it, making early reps easier and later reps more challenging within a single session. For recovering hands, that built-in warm-up is a feature.
And unlike most rehab equipment, it is compact enough to use anywhere — at your desk, in the car, while watching television. Consistent repetition drives recovery, and putty makes consistent repetition effortless to fit in.
WHAT HAND THERAPY PUTTY TARGETS
GRIP STRENGTH
Repeated squeezing engages the flexor muscles across your palm and fingers. Progressive resistance builds strength without equipment.
FINGER DEXTERITY
Pinching, rolling, and shaping exercises challenge individual finger control — essential for fine motor recovery.
RANGE OF MOTION
Stretching putty gently takes joints through their full range of motion, reducing stiffness and maintaining flexibility.
COORDINATION
Complex manipulation tasks — braiding, coiling, pressing patterns — rebuild the neural pathways for precise hand movement.
5 FOUNDATIONAL EXERCISES
FULL GRIP SQUEEZE
Wrap the putty in your palm and squeeze with all fingers. Hold 3–5 seconds. Repeat 10–15 times. Targets overall grip strength.
PINCH AND PULL
Pinch a section of putty between thumb and each finger, then pull slowly. Repeat for each finger. Builds fine motor control.
FINGER EXTENSION
Flatten putty into a pancake. Press fingers in and then splay outward against the resistance. Good for extensor strength.
THUMB OPPOSITION
Press thumb into putty against each finger in sequence. Slow, deliberate contact. Restores opposition and precision grip.
WRIST ROLL
Roll putty into a rope between both palms while rotating your wrists. Engages both hands and promotes wrist mobility.
Always consult your occupational or physical therapist before beginning a hand therapy program, especially if you are post-surgery or managing a diagnosed condition.
WHY BEAST PUTTY FOR HAND THERAPY
Therapeutic putty quality varies significantly. Cheap formulations lose their consistency fast — getting too sticky in heat, too stiff in cold, or breaking down after a few weeks of daily use. Beast Putty is formulated to maintain consistent resistance and texture over months of regular use.
It is also clean. No dye transfer onto your hands, no residue on surfaces. For people doing hand therapy after injury or surgery, the last thing you need is a mess to clean up with hands that are already struggling.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is hand therapy putty used for?
Hand therapy putty is used by occupational therapists and physical therapists to improve grip strength, finger dexterity, and fine motor coordination. It is commonly used in recovery from hand or wrist injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, arthritis management, and neurological conditions affecting hand function.
How does putty resistance affect hand therapy?
Different resistance levels target different therapeutic goals. Softer putty is used early in recovery to build range of motion without strain. Firmer putty is used to build grip strength and endurance. The variable nature of putty — it can be shaped into different configurations for different exercises — makes it more versatile than static resistance tools like hand grippers.
Can I use Beast Putty for hand therapy at home?
Yes. Beast Putty is a good option for home hand therapy exercises. It provides consistent, quality resistance and is easy to use without special equipment. If you are recovering from an injury or surgery, always follow the guidance of your occupational or physical therapist on exercise protocols and resistance levels.
Is sensory putty good for arthritis?
Gentle putty exercises can help maintain hand mobility and reduce stiffness associated with arthritis. Warm the putty in your hands before exercising to soften it and make the resistance more manageable. Avoid overworking inflamed joints — if you experience increased pain, reduce the intensity and duration, and consult your care provider.
